Assam: Soil Erosion Poses Major Risks in Hatsingimari

HATSINGIMARI: With the rising water levels, several parts of the state are facing massive soil erosion. The Hatsingimari region of the state is also facing massive problems because of massive soil erosion. Several key infrastructures of the region including the Sukhsor Beparipara Bridge, Sukhsor Higher Secondary School and the health centre in Sukhsor and multiple residences of the region are under fear of being swept away by the rising waters.

Hatsingimari is the headquarters of the South Salmara-Mankachar district of Assam. The Sukhsor locality is just three kilometres from the centre of the district and has been facing massive problems because of soil erosion in this round of flood.

According to local reports, about 5000 families in the region have been affected by the current round of flooding and the resulting soil erosion. Hundreds of bighas of fertile agricultural land have also been destroyed because of the flooding. The local people have also requested the state government to take permanent steps towards the resolution of the soil erosion problems and alleged that proper steps have not been taken in this regard as of now.

According to an official report, 444 villages in 15 districts have been affected by floods. These include 125 villages in the Kokrajhar district, 18 villages in the Lakhimpur district, 81 in the Nalbari district, 94 villages in the Darrang district and 21 villages in the Hojai district. Till today, 25 relief camps had been set up in the affected areas. Among these 25 relief camps, 17 have been set up in the Lakhimpur district. Embankments have been breached in Gohpur, Raha and Tihu while in Barama, Bijni, Patharighat, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji and Dotoma, roads, culverts, schools and Anganwadi centres have been destroyed. The district authorities are on alert to tackle any emergency. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams have been deployed in the affected areas for relief and rescue operations.
