DHUBRI: The Assam State Election Commission (SEC) on Saturday finally rejected the candidature of AGP candidate Anima Devi Sarkar, who was in the fray from Ward No 15 under Dhubri Municipal Board.
According to Dhubri district BJP sources, Dhubri District Returning Officer and Deputy Commissioner Ambamuthan MP, received a complaint from the BJP regarding submission of fake Scheduled Caste (SC) certificate by the AGP candidate. After verification, the candidature of the AGP candidate was rejected.
When contacted, Dhubri district BJP in-charge president Prosenjit Dutta, while welcoming the decision of the State Election Commission to reject the candidature of the AGP nominee, informed that Anima Devi Sarkar belongs to Brahmin family and she had produced a fake Scheduled Caste certificate along with her nomination paper.
Dutta said that a Brahmin girl could not become an SC by virtue of marrying a man of Scheduled Caste. The caste is related to birth in a Scheduled Caste family, he further clarified.
" When the Returning Officer sent the complaint to State Election Commissioner for necessary action, it approved the rejection of candidature and ordered to conduct the poll with two candidates in the fray from Ward No 15." Dutta added.
Earlier, after rejection of her candidature, Anima Devi Sarkar had filed a Writ Petition in the Gauhati High Court, seeking withdrawal of the rejection order of her candidature. However, the court upheld the SEC's decision.
Meanwhile, the poll campaign ended today and all electioneering, too, was completed with distribution of EVMs.
