Guwahati: A student was killed and two of his companions were severely injured in a road mishap in an awful incident that took place at Bamumbori in Hajo road in Assam on 5 February.
The name of the deceased is Satyajit Nath. He, along with two of his friends, were going to attend Saraswati Puja festivities in their college. Little did they know what was coming their way.
The incident unraveled when they were on their way to the college in their two-wheeler and a dumper struck their vehicle. Satyajit was killed on the spot.
The other two somehow managed to survive. It could be due to the fact that they were the pillion riders as a result of which the impact of the hit was less as compared to the rider.
However, they are critically injured and have been rushed to Guwahati so that they avail better medical attention.
The injured students have been identified as Rahul Nath and Champak Nath. All of them hailed from Borkhetri and they were pursuing their higher education in Bamunbori Swahid Suwarani College.
Later, the dumper truck's driver surrendered himself before the police along with the truck in Doulakhal police station.
According to reports, the police were late in arriving at the spot as a result of which the locals in the area were outraged. The agitated locals took to the streets to protest.
The enraged protestors reportedly sat on the streets and also burned tires to voice their anger regarding the tragic incident.
Earlier, there were fears that the Saraswati Puja celebrations in Assam could be spoiled due to rain predictions in the state. Weather forecasts predicted that Guwahati will receive light spells of rain on the day of Saraswati Puja due to cyclonic circulation over west Assam.
However, to the delight of Saraswati puja enthusiasts, Guwahati did not experience rain on 5 February as a result of which the Saraswati Puja celebrations took place as usual.
