Assam: Students face problems for deplorable conditions of road connecting school

LAKHIMPUR: At a time when infrastructure facilities are recognized as one of the key factors influencing educational outcomes in the field of education, the students of Chengajan-Majorbari High School have to pursue their education amid poor infrastructure facilities. It is alleged that the insufficient infrastructure facilities of the school have resulted in waning enthusiasm and interest among students, affecting their active participation in the learning process.

The Chengajan-Majorbari High School, located under Dhemaji Education Block, was established in 1994 with the common endeavour of the social workers, local public of Chengajan, Majorbari and Lamajan to spread education in the flood and erosion affected areas under Dhemaji district, the home district of Education Minister Dr Ranoj Pegu. Then the teachers in the school rendered their dedicated service without receiving a penny in the name of salary for long 26 years. However, the school was provincialized in 2021 under ‘The Assam Education (Provincialization of Services of Teachers and Re-organisation of Educational Institutions) Act, 2017’. It is the single high school under Chengajan, Majorbari and Lamajan where students from more than twenty villages under the flood and erosion affected areas pursue their education. But the infrastructure facilities of the school are very poor, as a result of which the students of the school have to face serious problems while continuing their academic journey.

In the current academic year, the enrolment of the school in Class IX is 154 while the same in Class X is 168 as per information received. These students are currently facing problems due to lack of adequate classrooms. Moreover, the school has been deprived of another basic facilities like pure drinking water, boundary walls, urinal, latrines etc.

On the other hand, the school connecting road, known as Chengajan-Majorbari School-Chengajan Mangalboriya Bazaar connecting road, is also in dilapidated conditions. The road is affected by artificial flood even after a light shower. Under such circumstances, the students, academic staff of the school, including the local public, have to suffer a lot while going to the school.

Chengajan-Majorbari High School Development and Management Committee president Tolan Sonowal, Chengajan regional unit Ganatantrik Nagarik Adhikar Suraksha Mancha president Bhumasa Basumatary, general secretary Niranjan Namahsudra, Dhemaji district unit Bengali Yuva-Chatra Federation president Dharmendra Das have demanded Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu, Lakhimpur MP Pradan Baruah and local MLA to initiate steps to develop the poor infrastructure facilities of the school and deplorable conditions of the Chengajan-Majorbari School-Chengajan Mangalboriya Bazaar connecting road at the earliest for the interest of the students.
