SIVASAGAR: A suspected linkman of the United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) or ULFA (I) was shot at by the local police after he allegedly tried to flee from police custody. He was apprehended by Assam Police on August 12.

This incident took place in the early hours of Wednesday in the Sivasagar district of the state. He was reportedly involved in several extortion cases in the region.

Another suspected linkman of the militant outfit United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) or ULFA (I) was apprehended by the police on Monday. This incident took place just one day ahead of the celebrations of the 77th Independence Day of the country. It can be noted that the suspect was arrested after he shared news regarding the banned outfit over his social media. He was identified as Ranjit Boro belonging to the Tupiya locality of the region. And the news he shared was regarding the banned outfit calling for a boycott of the Independence Day celebrations.

The 77th Independence Day is the boycott call by the United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) and the NSCN/GPRN. Security arrangements have been put in place to foil any ulterior designs by the outlawed organizations to cause any kind of law and order issues. The authorities asked people to be vigilant and report any suspicious incidents or persons.

On Saturday, ULFA-I and the NSCN/GPRN issued a statement calling on people to boycott the 77th Independence Day celebrations. Moreover, the outlawed militant outfits have called for an 18-hour "bandh" (total shutdown) from 12:01 am to 6 pm on August 15. The statement, issued in the name of Captain Rumel Axom from the ULFA-I’s Publicity Department, denounced the Independence Day celebrations and advocated for a united stand in western Southeast Asia (WeSEA) to address the so-called colonial exploitation.
