Assam: Suspected Wildlife Poachers Arrested With Two Hand-Made Guns

LUMDING: Two suspected poachers of wildlife were apprehended during an operation carried out in the reserve forest area of Lumding. Two handmade guns were also recovered from the suspects.

The two hunters were apprehended by a patrol party during a regular check carried out in the protected area. The suspects were reportedly waiting to hunt wild animals at the Lalpahar locality in the reserved forest when they were apprehended by the forest guards. They are said to belong to the Murabasti locality and were identified as Santosh Gowala and Raghab Gaur.

The forest officials mentioned that they are looking into the possibility of the involvement of more people in this racket. Meanwhile, a case has been registered under the Wildlife Act and an investigation has been initiated.

Meanwhile, the Orang National Park and Tiger Reserve (ONPTR)- the habitat of more than 128 one-horned rhinos and 30 Royal Bengal Tigers, besides other wildlife species, will ceremonially be reopened for tourists and visitors from October 1. Informing this to The Sentinel, Divisional Forest Officer of Mangaldai Wildlife Division, Pradipta Barua said that in the presence of wildlife activists, staff, media persons and villagers of the fringe areas, the Park will be reopened for this season. However, the Park will be closed to tourists and visitors every Monday.

Manas National Park and Tiger Reserve, nestled in the serene landscape of Assam, India, is also preparing to reopen its gates for the eagerly awaited 2023-2024 tourist season on October 1, 2023. The park had been temporarily closed to visitors since June 5, 2023, as a precautionary measure during the monsoon season, ensuring both the safety of tourists and the preservation of its natural beauty.

The much-anticipated announcement regarding the park's reopening was made by Mr. Rajen Choudhury, the esteemed Field Director of Manas National Park. This official communiqué was issued on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, setting the stage for nature enthusiasts and wildlife aficionados to once again explore the rich biodiversity of this sanctuary.
