GUWAHATI: The owner of the tea estate revealed that a specialty tea from Assam's Dibrugarh area sold for Rs 1.15 lakh per kg at a private auction on Friday.

According to Rajan Lohia of Manohari Tea Estate, "Manohari Gold Tea" garnered the highest bid at an auction on the exclusive website Tea Inntech. This year, Lohia explained, "we had to sell this batch through private auction due to the cap of Rs 1 lakh per kilogramme set by the Tea Board India at Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC)."

According to him, this is the highest price tea has ever brought at a similar auction. RK Tea Sales purchased one kilogramme of the premium tea, the source claimed. Over the years, tea from the Manohari brand, particularly its gold variation, had been earning high prices at the GTAC and breaking new records.

In December 2021, Manohari Gold sold for Rs 99,999 per kg through GTAC. In February of this year, 'Golden Pearl' from AFT Techno Trade achieved a similar price at the same auction house. When Pabhojan Gold Tea sold for Rs 1 lakh per kg at the Jorhat Tea Auction Centre in June, this high price was eclipsed by a rupee.

Additionally, Pabitra Margherita of the BJP from Assam has recently petitioned the Central government to designate tea as the national beverage of India.

Margherita stated that many individuals include tea in their everyday lives and that many people in the nation begin their days with a cup of tea during Zero Hour of the Rajya Sabha.

"The Assamese people will enthusiastically celebrate the event. As a result, I want the Center to continue working with me to advance Assam's tea sector," he continued.

Margherita further informed the House that the market is flooded with numerous tea-flavored drinks, which is hurting the tea business. He pleaded with the authorities, saying, "I implore that proper action is taken in this regard.
