JAMUGURIHAT: The 2nd edition of Teej festival organized by the Gamiripal Mahila Samiti was held on Wednesday in the Gamiripal Natya Mandir premises with a day-long programme.
The programme began with illumination of ceremonial lamps by Krishna Adhikari and Budhimati Devi respectively. Chitra Prasad Sarma, a retired teacher planted a sapling. The open session held with Bala Kumari Devi was inaugurated by Dal Bahadur Chetry. Sootea MLA Padma Hazarika graced the occasion as a chief guest.
During his address, he made a humble appeal to all to stand united in conservation of traditional rituals and economic empowerment as well. Anjan Baskota, recipient of Sahitya Akademi’s Yuva Puraskar, attended the event as an appointed speaker who traced the cultural and religious significance of the Teej festival.
A series of cultural activities were performed in between the programmes. The open session was also addressed by Chitralekha Devi, headmistress of Panpur HSS, Chakrapani Sarma, artiste pensioner, Dr Tilak Sarma, assistant professor of THB College, Dr Dhundiraj Upadhyaya, assistant professor of Darrang College, Ashok Sarma, assistant teacher of Panpur HSS. The event was attended by dignitaries of the locality. All the proceedings of the meeting were conducted by Usha Devi while Khina Devi, assistant secretary offered a vote of thanks. Teej is a mega festival of feasting and fasting celebrated by the women of the Gorkha community.
