GUWAHATI: In a reprehensible incident, reported from Nagaon district in Assam, two teenage boys were partially tonsured and paraded on the street in a humiliating manner by a mob on alleged theft charges.

The incident is reported to have taken place in Goria Kawoimari area in Juria town of Nagaon district on Friday morning.

According to available information, the two teenagers were allegedly caught stealing by people of the locality at around 12 am midnight and were held captive until Friday morning, when the reported parade took place.

They two youths were allegedly tortured in captivity, during which their heads were partly shaved and black ink smeared on their faces. They were also garlanded with sandals and tin boxes and then paraded in the locality.

Videos of the incident show the duo being paraded publicly in the area, while the mob surrounded them, hurling abuses at them as they walked alongside.

What is even more surprising is that local police is not reported to have arrived at the scene till this report was made available. More details are being awaited.

In yet another incident of moral policing reported earlier today, a young woman was badly beaten up by a mob of young men at Dumuni Ghat near Baksa.

Reportedly a resident of Kajiamati village in Baksa, the victim was physically assaulted for reasons that are not clear till now. The video of the incident was widely circulated on social media with graphic images of the young girl being thrashed by the group.

Such incidents of so- called moral policing, where people take the law into their own hands are occurring more frequently in Assam.

Earlier, in an incident of moral policing on April 23, two young women were harassed by a group of people near the bridge of the Beki river on the National Highway 31 in Assam’s Barpeta Road.

The women attacked by the mob were accused of carrying out immoral acts at a nearby dhaba and were subsequently subjected to verbal and physical assault.

According to sources, the women were dragged out of the dhaba and subjected to verbal abuse and were even beaten by the public for carrying out immoral activities in the dhaba. The mob then proceeded to break into the dhaba and ransack the premises.

A customer in the dhaba was even beaten up by the mob of men. Police picked up 11 of them for taking the law into their own hands.
