GUWAHATI: Chief Minister of Assam, Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday launched the export of the locally produced Litchi from Tezpur in Assam's Darrang district to the United Kingdom.

The exported Tezpur Litchi, which has been given a geographical indication (GI) tag for its excellent quality and pleasant flavour will make its way to the London market by Agnigarh Farmer Producer Company through Kiega Exims at Tezpur Convention Center in Sonitpur district.

Notably, Kiega Exims is a joint collaboration of AAU, Agriculture department, Sonitpur and NABARD supported by APEDA, APART, BNCA, AAU, Tezpur University & district administration.

The export of litchis will help in uplifting the economic condition of small and marginal farmers in the district.

"The export of the locally produced Litchi fruit will further help the local farmers to make more profits. This will also add a boost to the production of Litchi in local farms in the district," the CM added.
