Guwahati: Three under trial prisoners fled from the district jail located at Diphu in Assam's Karbi Anglong following the security lapse and heavy rain on Tuesday night.

The three prisoners identified as Abdul Ainul, Idris Ali, and Ajmir were kept in an isolation ward after testing positive for COVID-19.

Of these three prisoners, Abdul was apprehended in connection with a theft case while the other two were nabbed in a drug peddling case.

''The accused tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday following which they were kept in an isolation room. It was raining heavily on Tuesday night and there was no power supply at that time. They took advantage and fled by breaking the window of the room where they were kept in isolation,'' TOI quoted Jail Superintendent Tapan Kumar Chutia.

However, Jail Superintendent didn't comment anything on about the security lapse.

Speaking over the same, IG (prisons) Barnali Sharma asserted that the matter will be investigated as to how the accused managed to flee away from the jail despite there being enough security.

She also added that if any officials are found guilty action will be taken against them.

Meanwhile, the State Government has decided to remit the sentences of 18 prisoners of three different categories on August 15.

The state-level screening committee selected 18 prisoners of three categories for the remission of their sentences in sync with Independence Day.

The committee recommended the remission of the sentence of a prisoner falling in the category of the offence at a young age (18-21 years), Biren Ghatowar. He has already completed 50 percent of this imprisonment term.

Twelve convicts in the category of prisoners completing two-thirds of their imprisonment terms and five male convicts above 60 years of age and completing over 50 percent of their sentence periods will also get remission. The five are Amulya Das, Chutka Kahar, Saidur Rahman, another Saidur Rahman and Hafijur Rahman.
