Assam to Help Victims of Manipur Violence who Sought Refuse in the State

GUWAHATI: As the situation in the neighbouring state of Manipur remains grim, the chief minister of Assam has directed the district administration of the Cachar district of Assam to help the families of the neighbouring state who have been affected by the ongoing violence in the state.

Assam shares a boundary with the state of Manipur and the Cachar district has a small population of Manipuri people resident there. Due to the recent violence, some of the affected families from the neighbouring state have come to Assam and sought refuge in the state.

"Several families affected by the recent incidents in Manipur have sought refuge in Assam. I have requested the District Administration of #Cachar to take care of these families," Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted. "I am also in constant communication with the HCM @NBirenSingh and have pledged the full support of the Assam Government during this hour of crisis," he added.

The state of Manipur has been witnessing sporadic incidents of violence since several days owning to the survey carried out by the state government in the protected forest areas and wetlands of the state. Several tribal communities blamed the destruction of the places of religious significance by the state government, triggering the conflict.

Last Wednesday, a court decision regarding the granting reservation status to the Meitei community of Manipur triggered massive protests and clashes between the already angry tribal communities and the Meitei community. It is important to know that the Meitei community forms a significant part of the population of the state.

The ongoing conflicts have led to the displacement of over 9000 people in the state of Manipur. Exect number of people who have fled to Assam is not known as of now. The Indian Army has been deployed in the state to take control of the situation and mobile internet remains suspended.
