GUWAHATI: The state government under chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is planning to organise a major supporting event named ‘Khel Maharan’ in the state in the month of November. This initiative is expected to popularise a wide variety of sports among the youth of the state.

The announcement regarding this decision by the state cabinet came in New Delhi on Wednesday. The chief minister had earlier chai this meeting. He mentioned that this initiative will enable the state to identify the sports-related talent at the very grassroots level and thereby train and nurture them towards becoming experts in their own arenas.

Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah mentioned that the Khel Maharan event will be organised across the state in several different stages. It will be undertaken at the gram panchayat, urban local body and ward levels. It will be organised by the village council development committee, MAC level in the Bododand Territorial Region, Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council and Dima Hasao Autonomous Council Assembly constituencies. It will also be organised at the district level and state level.

The events will commence on November 1, 2023, and come to an end by January 10, 2024. Jayanta Malla Barua also announced that the necessary funds for organising the events have already been approved by the state cabinet. Competitions will be organised in five disciplines, namely athletics, football, kabaddi, volleyball and kho-kho. Four age categories have also been announced including Under 19 (Men), Under 19, (Women), Above 19 (Men) and Above 19 (Women). District-level events will be hosted in respective sports establishments while the state-level events will be organised in five cities of the state namely Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Silchar, Kokrajhar and Diphu. Each of these cities will be hosting the finals of a particular discipline thus giving a boost to these cities in terms of sports as well as the sports persons across the state.
