What is a Tornado?

Tornadoes are revolving air columns with one end in connection with the Earth and the other with storm clouds. Tornadoes are not common in Assam, they are not unheard of and the Bengal region is particularly prone to them.

Meanwhile, on Friday, India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow watch for Assam, Meghalaya, West Bengal, Sikkim, Jharkhand and Odisha.

Assam and Meghalaya will be on high alert until Tuesday, May 10, while Sikkim and Odisha will be on high alert again the following Tuesday.

A yellow watch has been issued to remind people to be updated about the bad weather.

However, despite the region's recent wet weather, rainfall averages for some of these states are still well below the pre-monsoon season's average precipitation.

For the next five days, rainfall of light to moderate intensity will be scattered to fairly widespread across Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura with isolated thunderstorms and lightning on Friday, May 6.
