GUWAHATI: With a spike in demand from tourists to visit the state, Assam Tourism Development Corporation is targeting over one crore domestic traveller footfall in 2022–2023 (or 1.3 billion).
Padmapani Bora, secretary of tourism and managing director of the Assam Tourist Development Corporation stated that, this is a good indicator since more and more people are interested in visiting the North East and Assam as a destination.
"Up until January of this fiscal year, we had nearly 88 lakh domestic guests, more than twice as many as we had in FY20" (51 lakh), he mentioned.
He continued, "This has given us confidence that the domestic tourist footfall is going to cross over one crore in FY23," noting that this is mostly due to the confidence people have developed regarding the state's law and order situation.
According to data, Assam saw visitor footfall of 13.5 lakh in 2020–21 and 17 lakh in 2021–22, he said.
The state, which is best known as the entryway to the North East, has excellent road, rail, and air connections to the rest of the nation and offers adventure, spiritual, and animal tourism.
Assam also saw an increase in foreign visitors, with over 10,000 arriving there through January of this fiscal year compared to 1,850 during FY20, according to Bora.
He continued, "Nepal, Bhutan, the UK, France, Germany, Russia, Croatia, the US, and Switzerland are among the top 10 international source markets for the state."
By easing shooting permissions with single-window clearances for film productions and offering the required support to lure filmmakers, Assam, according to Bora, is concentrating on boosting film tourism and positioning itself as the most film tourism-friendly state.
The state is creating a tourism strategy and supporting single-window approval for the industry.
"In collaboration with the film community and tourist partners, we'll aggressively carry out the policy's implementation and market Assam as the top film tourism destination."
In addition, he stated, "We anticipate launching the single window approval for film tourism in April."
The tourism business recently received industry status from the state, which, according to him, will undoubtedly significantly increase private investment in the state.
According to Bora, Assam has established a website for its tourism department that serves as a single point of contact for visitors from outside the state and offers the ability to book hotels and safaris online.
