SILCHAR: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the apex body for governing the telecom sector of the state, organised an event with the aim of safeguarding consumer interests and promoting awareness among consumers. The event was organised in Silchar of Assam on Wednesday.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India organizes consumer outreach programmes (COP), workshops on capacity building of consumer organisations and seminars on issues of consumer interests and protection. As a part of this initiative, TRAI (Regional Office Kolkata) organised a Consumer Outreach Programme in Silchar to apprise the general public about various initiatives taken by TRAI to safeguard consumer interests.
Along with the general public, representatives from the Telecom Service Providers also participated in the programme. Senior officers of the Department of Telecom, Government of India also participated in the programme and spoke about other government initiatives for the benefit of the citizens such as 4G saturation project, BharatNet project, Sanchar Saathi etc.
Malaya Dutta Borah, Asst. Professor, NIT, Silchar was the guest speaker who delivered a lecture on Cyber Security. 2. During the programme, a detailed presentation was also given about the provisions of different consumer-centric regulations, directions and orders relating to Value Added Services (VAS), Unsolicited Commercial Communications (UCC), Mobile Number Portability), Complaint Redressal Mechanism, Data services and Tariff etc. Participants were also informed about the benefits of various Mobile apps, Tariff portals and Network coverage maps developed by TRAI for consumer empowerment and how consumers can take advantage of these apps /portals.
Participants were also briefed about TRAI's new regulations/ Directions on UCC and how they should be extra careful about different telecom fraud like tower fraud, fraudulent messages/ calls etc. Participants were advised to actively participate in the TRAI's consultation process to become a part of the policy-making process.
Prasun Chandra, Director of the Department of Telecom deliberated on the unfounded concerns of a section of the citizens regarding radiation from cellular towers through scientific explanations and government measures. The team from BSNL, led by Sashank Bhalekar, ITS, PGM, BSNL informed the audiences about the progress of BHaratNet and 4G Saturation projects in the State of Assam, particularly in the Cachar district. The presentation was followed by an interactive session wherein participants raised questions related to various aspects of telecom services.
