KOKRAJHAR: The government of Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) in collaboration with Netherlands counterpart held a training and public meeting with pig farmers at Mushalpur Cultural Complex, Mushalpur in Baksa district on Friday as a culmination of the 5-day training programme from November 13 to November 17 . The programme was organized under the Bodoland Pig Mission in collaboration with PUM (Programma Uitzending Managers), Netherlands.

Martjin Steenaert, a veterinarian by profession, conducted a two-day training session on November 13 and November 14 with farmers selected under the mission and talked to them about the importance of farm economics for profitable pig farming, the need for biosecurity measures to prevent and control diseases, the causes of diseases among pigs and discussed methods of maintaining farm records.

On November 15 and November 16, he conducted training sessions with Veterinary Officers and Veterinary Field Assistants of the selected clusters for the Bodoland Pig Mission. He discussed the problems regarding veterinary infrastructures in BTR. The necessity of early warning systems for the detection and control of diseases among livestock was also deliberated. He shared the methods and formats with the farmers to streamline the reporting of diseases.

Executive Member (EM) of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary of Bodoland Territorial Council Rakesh Brahma said the Government of BTR under the Bodoland Pig Mission will soon be distributing piglets to more than 5,000 pig farmers and will conduct similar training and awareness programmes related to biosecurity measures to reduce the mortality of pigs.
