JORHAT: A trio from Assam has developed a video playing and sharing app called TipTeapi, which they hope would be India's answer to the globally popular Chinese app TikTok.

Tip Teapi is developed by Saswati Kotoky, Amarjyoti Gautam, and Himanga Madhukalya of Dibrugarh. They are all MCA PG degree holders from Jorhat Engineering College. The app works along the lines of how TikTok functions.

The app has 12 categories and people can upload their videos that others can view. TipTeapi allows users to make friends, follow, like, comment and share videos through social media.

TipTeapi is a free app. It can be downloaded from the Google Play Store and will be available for users in India and a few other countries. It was launched on Saturday at the Jorhat Press Club.

The trio said they had come together in 2019 to form a start-up for developing apps. The COVID-19 lockdown period made them focus on the entertainment-based apps.

According to reports, the app was developed in six months.

Speaking on the occasion of the launch, Saswati, who is who is in charge of sales, marketing, HR & legal, said that the idea of the app came from their aim to create a platform for people to show their prowess in different areas, be it drama, comedy, music, art, science, cooking or education.

Amarjyoti, the chief product engineer reportedly dismissed all notions of privacy breach and informed that unlike TikTok, this indigenous app has all security measures in place to ensure the protection of a user's data and privacy. He further informed that they have ensured the option of blocking objectionable and offensive content on their platform.

Himango, the database and service engineer in the group said they got help from an US based alumnus of a Jorhat Engineering College, who provided a funding of Rs 10 lakh to set up the start-up.
