DIBRUGARH: Two persons were injured during a scuffle that broke out between the police and a section of people participating in the Kali Puja immersion procession in Dibrugarh on Wednesday evening.

The confrontation between the police and individuals accompanying the Kali Puja idols took place over loud music being played during the procession. The incident took place at around 8.15 pm when the idols were being taken in a procession for their immersion in the Brahmaputra.

The situation escalated when someone from the crowd pushed an on-duty police personnel, causing him to stumble and fall on the road. After that other policemen present on the spot roughed up a section of the people.

Amid the chaos, two youths who were waiting near the petrol pump to refuel the vehicle carrying the idols were also beaten up by the cops resulting in their injuries.

The injured individuals were identified as Bicky Singh and Tinku Phukan, both residents of the Jyotinagar area of the town.

Bicky Singh is the son of Arjun Singh, a retired Town Sub Inspector (TSI) of the Dibrugarh police station. The two injured youths were rushed to the hospital for necessary medical attention.

Bicky Singh said, “We were a part of the group transporting the idols for immersion. When we reached Thana Chariali, the police told us to stop the sound system. After that we came to the petrol pump to fill up the vehicle with fuel carrying the idol but the policemen on duty beat me up. I fainted and fell down on the road.”

Following the incident, the enraged participants of the immersion procession blocked the road and raised slogans against the police alleging highhandedness. Later senior police officials rushed to the spot and managed to diffuse the situation with assistance from the puja organisers.
