KARIMGANJ: In another success against the miscreants involved in the trade of narcotics substances in the Northeastern region of the country, Assam police apprehended two suspected peddlers from the region.

Officials under Assam’s Churaibari police station were able to apprehend two smugglers with Yaba tablets while attempting to smuggle the consignment from Assam to Tripura at Churaibari on the Assam-Tripura border. The tablets were seized from an Agartala-bound six-wheeler truck bearing the registration number AS 10 AC 5416.

A total of 9,400 Yaba tablets packed in 47 packets were seized during a routine police check from a secret chamber in the vehicle. The market value of the seized Yaba tablets is said to be around Rs 47 lakh.

The arrested individuals were identified as Bilal Uddin and Mintu Malakar. Both are residents of Karimganj district of Assam.

Previously also, in a major crackdown on narcotics, Assam Police seized drugs worth Rs 35 crore in the Cachar district and arrested two persons in connection, officials said on Thursday. Based on a tip-off, the police launched a secret operation on National Highway 37 in the Banskandi area, some 13 km away from Silchar town. The police then intercepted a vehicle which was carrying 1,70,000 Yaba tablets hidden in secret chambers. The two arrested persons were identified as Kipjen and Laldomsa Hamar.

According to the police, the highway connects Assam with Manipur and the contraband substances were coming from the latter state. Cachar district SP Numal Mahatta said, “We have carried out the operation on Wednesday evening and successfully recovered a huge quantity of drugs. Two persons were arrested and they are being interrogated. Further investigation is underway.”

Although the Assam Police continues to take action against miscreants involved in such activities, they continue to find new means to transport narcotics using new means every day.
