TINSUKIA : As number of drug addiction cases has been increasing in alarming manner in Tinsukia district, unauthorised so-called de-addiction centres have mushroomed in several locations of rural Tinsukia. These de-addiction centres allegedly resorted to kidnapping and extortion from youths and their families.

Revelation of Arun Moran of Digboi-Makum who was forcibly kidnapped on Wednesday exposed modus-operandi of few drug de-addiction centres operating in Tinsukia district. Though based on 2 FIRs lodged at Digboi PS, police arrested the owner of New Group Foundation Pallab Jyoti Chutia, Arun Moran, a non-addicted youth stated before media that he was kidnapped by few youths from Makum and was taken to the de-addiction centre where he was brutally tortured and asked his parents to pay an amount, minimum Rs 10,000 for his release. Highly place source said majority of the de-addiction centres have of late turned into commercial enterprises being run by ex-addicts and employed some unemployed youths who act as informers and kidnappers.

According to a source, the recent Phillobari, Rupai cases needed a high level inquiry by a composite team. Though these de-addiction centres come under the ambit of Social Justice Department. After one de-addiction centre got registered it opened several branches in semi-urban locations defying all norms and getting into unholy business using money and muscle power, said the source.
