SILCHAR: Assam unit of Indian Medical Association (IMA) had strongly condemned the incident in the Silchar Medical College and Hospital where a Drug Inspector abused and slapped a junior doctor. Dr Arunima Goswami, president and Dr Atul Kumar Kalita, state secretary of IMA said, the association was deeply concerned about the increasing incidents of violence against doctors in Assam. They strongly condemned the recent incident at the SMCH where a Drug Inspector in an inebriated condition assaulted a junior doctor within the hospital premises. They demanded stringent punishment and strong deterrent departmental proceedings against the culprit.

On September 11, Bonrai Rongmei, the Drug Inspector was reportedly assaulted by a group of junior doctors in the medicine ward of the SMCH. Rongmei was later admitted in the SMCH. Junior doctors however claimed that Rongmei misbehaved with them and even abused one of their colleagues. The SMCH authority subsequently suspended Dr Anurag Dey, a junior doctor for three months.

Interestingly, the medical report of Rongmei suggested that he consumed alcohol and at the time of the incident he was reportedly inebriated. Junior Doctors Association then demanded immediate withdrawal of the suspension order. A junior doctor claiming herself an eyewitness to the incident claimed that it was Rongmei who grabbed the shirt of Anurag and slapped him. Later, Cachar chapter of IMA demanded the withdrawal of the suspension.
