Assam: Vendors make Dibrugarh Municipal Board a laughing stock

DIBRUGARH: Despite Dibrugarh Municipal Board’s (DMB) appeal to all vendors to vacate their places and go to the specific vending zone, some vendors are still doing business in the HS road area in Dibrugarh.

It seems that the vendors do not care about the notice issued by DMB to vacate the place. The HS road area has become congested due to the vendors who created ruckus in the area, especially during the evening. Recently, DMB had carried out an eviction drive in Dibrugarh and cleared many areas which were illegally encroached by the vendors.

DMB has specified vending zones for the street vendors and they were instructed to go to their places to do business, but some vendors do not care about such notices and are doing business in their usual place.

“Now DMB has become a laughing stock because after eviction, again the vendors come to their earlier places and do business as usual. Why are some vendors not taking the notices of DMB seriously? The whole HS road has become congested because of the illegal parking and street vendors. During evening time, you cannot walk freely in the road,” Rajen Sharma, a resident alleged.

He said, “The residents of HS road parked their vehicles on the roadside for several years but the district administration and DMB didn’t take any action to clear the road. Most of the people have vehicles but they do not have parking allotments.”

Meanwhile, DMB has taken measures by allotting specific vending zones for the street vendors but some of the vendors do not want to leave their earlier place for fear of losing their regular customers.

“We will become tough against the vendors who do not listen to our appeal and notices. We will carry out eviction drives and seize their shops and materials,” said an official of DMB.
