DHUBRI: The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC), Assam arrested three forest officials, including the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) in Dhubri, for allegedly demanding and accepting bribe from a sand mahal (quarry) owner on Thursday.
The officials who were caught red-handed by the anti-corruption team were DFO, Binod Kumar Payeng, AFS, and two grade-I staff - Ziaul Islam and Sahabaz Sultan.
Sources informed that DFO Payeng had allegedly mounted pressure to extort money from the complainant for allowing vehicles from his sand mahal to pass. The complainant then approached the anti-corruption team and agreed to cooperate in the action against the forest officials. Sources also informed that the vigilance team arrested Payeng, who had allegedly demanded the bribe and accepted the bribe through his official staff, Ziaul Islam and Sahabaz Sultan.
The anti-corruption team seized the bribe money and other incriminating documents from the possession of the accused. The arrested accused were taken to Guwahati where the trio would be produced before the court of the Special Judge, Assam. The Vigilance team has registered a case against them under various sections of law and an investigation is being carried out, sources said.
