GUWAHATI: In a shocking incident in Dhekiajuli, Sonitpur, Assam, two youths, identified as Baloram Basumatary and Jajiya Narzary, found themselves on the receiving end of vigilant justice after reportedly attempting to extort Rs 7 lakh from local resident Dalong Mampha. The duo allegedly posed as members of the banned militant outfit, United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I), adding an ominous layer to their criminal activities.

Dalong Mampha, residing in Panbari, Dhekiajuli, became a target when the two youths demanded a substantial sum from him, accompanied by physical assault and threats, including brandishing a gun. Mampha, unable to meet their extortion demands, fell victim to their aggression.

The situation took a turn when, on a subsequent visit to Panbari, the duo was apprehended by alert locals who decided to take matters into their own hands. The villagers, enraged by the attempted extortion and violence, administered a thrashing to Basumatary and Narzary before alerting the police.

Law enforcement swiftly responded, taking both accused individuals into custody. The seized gun used by the perpetrators added a dangerous dimension to the unfolding investigation. Authorities are now probing the authenticity of the duo's claimed association with ULFA-I, underscoring the complexity of the case.

This incident highlights the resilience of communities against criminal elements, showcasing a collective stand against extortion and intimidation. The villagers' swift and decisive action serves as a reminder that communities can play a crucial role in maintaining law and order, even as investigations continue into the veracity of the youths' alleged militant connections.

In a region with a history of insurgent activities, such events resonate beyond the immediate context, shedding light on the challenges faced by communities in navigating security concerns. The story unfolds against the backdrop of Assam's socio-political landscape, where vigilance becomes a community-driven imperative in the face of potential threats.

As the legal process unfolds, the case serves as a testament to the power of community solidarity and the determination to protect against criminal elements, offering a glimpse into the dynamics of justice beyond formal institutions.
