SILCHAR: Security forces and local residents got involved in violent clashes which broke out between them at Silchar in Assam’s Cachar district, according to reports on Wednesday.
Around 25 people were reportedly injured in the clashes, including several police personnel.
The clashes allegedly took place in the aftermath of the tragic rape and murder, followed by mutilation, of a girl. The body was recovered on Tuesday.
According to available information, a girl was allegedly raped and murdered in Silchar’s Rangikhari. The incident enraged the locals and they proceeded to block roads and hold a protest on the demand of the immediate arrest of the murderer.
A large number of security personnel were deployed after the situation grew tenser in Silchar. This proved counter-productive as it led to clashes between the protesting locals and police force.
Sources said that agitated locals resorted to pelting stones at the police personnel that were deployed to bring the situation under control. In return, the police had to blank fire and baton charge in order to disperse the people.
In the clashes that followed, several police personnel, including a CRPF jawan, were reportedly severely injured.
Reports informed that a total of 11 persons have been taken into custody by the police.
The clashes followed an incident of a 19-year-old girl in Silchar’s Rangikhari going missing on July 15. Three days after her disappearance, the girl's dead body was recovered in a mutilated condition from an under-construction building at Dwarbond, some 30 km away from Silchar, said the reports.
It was suspected by both the police as well as the family members of the deceased girl that she was raped and then brutally killed after acid was thrown on her.
The chaos erupted soon after the girl's body was handed over to her family members after completion of the post-mortem.
Earlier this month, a heated situation in Silchar town led to the formation of a peace committee by the Cachar district administration to maintain law and order in the area amidst the Eid-Ul-Adha festivities.
On the day of Bakri-Eid (Eid-Ul-Adha), a clash was reported between two communities over ‘Qurbani’ near Panchayat Road in Silchar. Later, tension gripped Silchar a day later after two Muslim families were allegedly attacked in two separate incidents.
According to available reports, a group of unidentified crooks attacked a four-wheeler vehicle carrying a family from a minority community near the Tarapur END Colony in Silchar at around 10:30 p.m.
The miscreants pelted stones at the vehicle and abused the passengers verbally with anti-Muslim comments.
A woman and a child reportedly sustained injuries during the attack,. The victims were identified as Ayesha Sultana Barbhuiya (60), wife of Maulana Abdul Sukur and Musfiq Choudhury (10).
The victims filed a case at Arunachal police station in Silchar in connection with the incident.
