Assam: Voices Raised Against Negligence and Poor Infrastructure

KARBI ANGLONG: The Kheroni Model Hospital in West Karbi Anglong has come under intense scrutiny and public outrage after a pregnant woman, Cherlita Bepiyi, delivered her baby midway to the hospital due to the lack of proper road infrastructure and absence of medical assistance. The incident has shed light on the dire situation faced by expectant mothers in the region, sparking demands for immediate action and accountability.

Cherlita Bepiyi's harrowing experience began in Jirikinding, where she had to navigate through treacherous terrain while in labour. The distance from her village, Makhim, to the nearest hospital was approximately 20 km, but due to the poor condition of the roads, reaching the hospital became a life-threatening ordeal.

Local residents, led by a former executive member of the Karbi council, Rensing Bey, expressed their anger and alleged that doctors were not present at the Kheroni Model Hospital during Cherlita's critical time. Dr Hitesh Teran, the doctor-in-charge of the hospital, has faced accusations of being absent most of the time. Calls for his transfer and strict action against him have intensified, with the Karbi Council's Chief Executive Member, Tuliram Ronghang, and divisional authorities joining the chorus of demand for accountability. Rensing Bey also highlighted the negligence of other officials and employees at the hospital. The lack of proper road connectivity and ambulance services has compounded the challenges faced by pregnant women like Cherlita, leaving them with no choice but to endure perilous journeys in search of medical care.

The incident has drawn attention to the deplorable condition of roads in Karbi Anglong and the hollow nature of the health sector, which is adversely affecting the lives of common people and leading to recurrent incidents of medical emergencies. As the community demands swift and effective action, authorities are under mounting pressure to address the critical issues plaguing Kheroni Model Hospital and improve healthcare services in the region. The well-being and safety of expectant mothers and patients must be prioritized, and accountability for negligence must be firmly established. The plight of Cherlita Bepiyi serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for comprehensive reforms and investment in both infrastructure and medical facilities to ensure that no individual in West Karbi Anglong is left to suffer due to the shortcomings of the healthcare system.
