GUWAHATI: Strayed away from its natural habitat, an elephant was seen roaming the streets of Tezpur town.
In a viral video, the animal was seen kicking and knocking off a bike parked on the roadside as panic-stricken onlookers were heard warning others about the elephant.
Notably, the elephant had crossed the Brahmaputra river from the southern bank before entering the city from its northern bank, news agency PTI quoted forest officials as saying.
The elephant first entered a house in the Chanmari area and looked for food in the kitchen. The report said that the elephant stayed there for some time before moving through the port to Chitralekha Park.
On seeing the elephant roaming in Tezpur, panic spread in the area. The report said it went to a Ganesh temple on the banks of the river and then to the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) bus stand, where it damaged several cars and two-wheelers parked there.
The elephant later entered a pit behind the transport department office and was finally sent back to the river by forest officials around 3 pm.
Earlier this month, three members of a family, including an infant, were killed in Udalguri district by a herd of wild elephants early Wednesday morning. The incident occurred in the remote Kamalabari village in the district along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border.
The deceased were identified as Nabin Basumatary (53), his wife Jamini Basumatary (33) and their 18-month-old child Hadanashwa Baswamatary. The locals said that a herd of wild elephants entered their village and went on a rampage.
The elephants destroyed several houses in the village, besides damaging paddy fields. An officer from the local police station said that according to the locals' claim, a family of three became terrified seeing the elephants and they started running from the place.
