DIBRUGARH: In another horrific incident of man-elephant conflict which have risen alarmingly in the last several years, a man was trampled to death by wild jumbos in Dibrugarh district of Assam on Saturday night.

The incident occurred at Abhaypur village of Namrup in the district.

The deceased has been identified as 48-year-old Nandeswar Gogoi. He is survived by his wife and three children.

As per information, a herd of elephants from the Joypur reserve forest strayed out in the open and were freely roaming on the roads. Deceased Gogoi encountered the herd when he was returning from the market at about 9pm on Saturday. One of the elephants trampled him to death.

Talking to the media, the villagers appealed to the concerned authorities to take stock of the situation and come up with a solution at the earliest. They also appealed to the authorities to provide compensation to the family of the deceased.

It may be highlighted here that man-elephant conflicts in the state have reached a spike in the recent several years. In the harvest season, herds of elephants come out into the residential areas and cause massive havoc leading to severe loss of lives and property. However, it is still unsure as to when a permanent solution can be achieved to solve the menace.

On the other hand, fingers also point to the settlements in areas under forest cover, thereby depriving the wild animals from their dwelling places. With the shrinkage of their habitat, the animals foray into the adjoining residential areas in search of food, thereby creating havoc which further leads to a conflict situation when the people defend with bows and arrows to keep them away.

It may be recalled here that another man was trampled to death in Dibrugarh district in the month of April this year. The incident occurred at Lezai area of the district when 40-year-old Megnath Gowala was crushed to death by a herd of wild elephants in the Sessa Nagaon village of the district. It was reported that deceased Gowala went out to graze his cattle when he encountered the herd of wild elephants who came out from the nearby forest. Before he could escape, Megnath Gowala was trampled to death by the herd.
