Assam: Woman Murders Her Two Daughters by Drowning

CACHAR: In a bizarre incident, a woman murdered her two daughters by drowning them in a pond. The woman was later arrested for her crime and an investigation has been started regarding the matter.

This incident took place in the Katikhal locality in Cachar which comes under the Kachudaram Police Station. The perpetrator, who was identified as Ajmira Begum Laskar reportedly drowned her daughters Rajina Begum Laskar (aged 3 years) and Fatima Begum Laskar. Then she brought back the dead bodies onto their bed and covered them with a blanket and slept off by their side.

Later when no one responded to any calls, the family members came inside and removed the blanket. They came in doubt once they noticed the wet clothes of the children and on checking they were found to be dead. The local people informed the police regarding the incident, who later visited the location and arrested Ajmira Begum Laskar. They also sent the dead bodies for a formal autopsy.

The woman had reportedly mentioned to someone that there was a quarrel between her and her husband who threatened to throw her out of their house, which led her to try to take her life as well as those of their children. While both the daughters perished, the woman managed to survive the incident. On being questioned, the husband however denied having any such fight.

Subrata Sen, the additional superintendent of police for Cachar mentioned that they are conducting a full-scale investigation into the matter, and preliminary information points out that the woman had decided to kill her children owning to some family-related problems.

In a similar incident that took place recently when a mother murdered her own child soon after birth as the newborn was a girl. This bizarre incident took place in the Itakhola region of the state on Thursday. Anowara Khaton, wife of Sofikul Seikh committed this act of child murder. They are residents of the Bandor Jonghol locality of Itakhola. Anowara Khaton reportedly murdered her newborn girl child and later buried the body.
