Assam woman's job application rejected due to her surname 'Chutia'

Guwahati: Priyanka Chutia, a girl belonging to the ethnic Chutia (also spelled as Sutiya) from Assam, discovered to her absolute horror that her online job application at government-run National Seed Corporation Limited got rejected due to confusion over the Hindi slang that sounds similar to ger surname.

Chutia later took to Facebook where she lamented the state of affairs in a lengthy post. "Imagine yourself going for a presentation and the panel laughs at you at the very first introduction speech," she wrote in frustration.

Priyanka, who hails from Assam's Gogamukh, holds a master's degree in Agricultural Economics and Farm Management and was applying for a job at NSCL when her registration was rejected because of her surname.

Apparently, the online job registration portal of the organization kept asking her to use "proper naming" words. In her frustration, the Assam girl mailed the help desk of the organization but received a system-generated mail.

Although her registration her finally accepted a day later, Priyanka said, "I am unable to move ahead and apply for the job as other problems cropped up. I don't know how to fix it." She later took to social media platform Facebook to pour out her woes.

"A Govt. owned big company like National Seed Corporation Ltd. rejects my online registration form for a job vacancy that I wanted to apply. And the reason is nothing but my Surname and the portal keeps on saying to use the proper naming word. I feel really sad and frustrated at times explaining people that I am not using slang but it's a community where I belong. #We really need to do something to identify ourselves and make recognizable nationally. This is not the first time. Imagine yourself going for a presentation and the panel laughs at you at the very first introduction speech. #I think my fellow community members must work on this rather than fighting over some petty issues on Facebook #BhumiputraKundiHena (sic)", she wrote in her post that quickly went viral.
