LAKHIMPUR: A district-level workshop on gender sensitization for police personnel was held at the digital classroom of North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous) in Lakhimpur. The workshop was organized by District Hub for Empowerment of Women, Department of Women and Child Development and Lakhimpur district administration under ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ initiative. The workshop was inaugurated by prominent academician Dr. Mukunda Rajbanshi by lighting the ceremonial lamp. Dr. Rajbanshi, in his lecture, said, “Gender inequality results in unequal opportunities, and it impacts on the lives of both genders, statistically it is girls that are the most disadvantaged. It is a social evil, which should be eradicated with the joint effort of all. The police department should pay adequate importance in this regard. Equal dignity should be paid to all genders.”

The event was anchored by Prangana Borah, the Mission Coordinator of District Hub for Empowerment of Women, wherein Assistant Commissioner of Lakhimpur, Sulakshana Borpatragohain delivered the welcome address. Attending the technical session of the workshop as resource person, Lakhimpur District Nodal Officer for National Mental Health, Dr. Samiul Akhtar Borborah delivered lecture on ‘Understanding of Psychological First Aid’ and ‘Psychosocial support for survivors during the time of occurrence and its importance’. On the other hand, Dr. Bornali Borah, HoD of the Department of Philosophy, North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous), delivered lecture on ‘Revisiting concepts of gender, sex and patriarchy’ and ‘Understanding the forms of gender based violence and their consequences- Power, Control and Violence’.

Eminent lawyer Minakhi Dutta Gohain Baruah delivered lecture on ‘Role of police in reporting, rescue and referral of victims of Gender-based violence’ and ‘Role of Judiciary: free legal aid and interim compensations and challengers in pursuit of justice’. Lakhimpur DLSA secretary Prasenjit Das, ASP Munindra Deuri, DIPRO Mandira Chayengiya, North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous) Principal Dr. Biman Chandra Chetia were among those who were present in the event.

On the other hand, District Hub for Empowerment of Women, Lakhimpur Department of Women and Child Development, Lakhimpur, in association with the District Social Welfare Department organized another training programme on “Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013” at the same place on Friday under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ initiative. The training programme was inaugurated by ASP Munindra Deuri. Dr. Samul Akhtar Borbora, Dr. Bornali Borah and lawyer Minakhi Dutta Gohain Baruah took part as trainers in the training programme too. Presiding Officer, members from the internal committee constituted under “Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 and headmasters, teachers of every school and educational institution of Lakhimpur participated in the training programme as trainees.
