MARIANI: A gang involved in blackmailing two people from another state staying at the Sehnai Bibah Bhawan to extort money from them was caught by police.

On Tuesday evening one man and three women went to the location and forcefully entered their room according to the allegations and the man threatened the two men inside the room to get married to the women. Meanwhile, noticing the sudden entry of the unknown people, the hotel management tried to stop them, which led to a commotion at the place and later informed the police.

The police team apprehended the three men from the hotel and the three women from the Mariani Thana Chariali and brought them to the Mariani police station. Preliminary investigations revealed that the man identified as Ikbal Ahmed was trying to trap the two men in honey trapping. The two so-called victims mentioned that they were told to come to the location on the pretext of getting married to Assamese girls. Meanwhile, Ikbal Ahmed also confessed that Nabeen Goala, Basudev Tanti and Bitu Sonowal from Tezpur were also involved in this racket.

Meanwhile, the police registered case number 88/23 under sections 448/419/ 120(B)/506/384/511. They have also arrested Ikbal Ahmed as a part of their investigation into the matter and they are searching for other parties who might be involved in the same.

Previously Assam Police had apprehended one person for him threatening one administrative official. The person has been accused of blackmailing Pankaj Borah, the ADC of the Sonitpur District of Assam and threatening him over a phone call. Taking note of the incident, the police were able to apprehend the accused from the Rangapara locality. Meanwhile, the state police mentioned that they have started an investigation into the matter towards finding and punishing the culprits.
