Assamese Vaishnavite Culture (Naam Prasanga) Reverberates in Delhi

MANGALDAI: Assamese Vaishnavite culture in the form of naam prasanga has once again come alive in the National Capital Region (NCR). As the Assamese month of Bhado was approaching, the community was eagerly waiting for the ‘Bhada Mohiya Naam’.

The hymns of Kirtan Ghosha and the holy sounds of khol, bhortaal and nagara were reverberating in the residence of Major General Ananta Bhuyan in Delhi Cantonment area. Talking to The Sentinel over phone, Major General Bhuyan said, “Like previous years, Asom Sattra Mahasabha, Delhi has organized the bhakats from Assam for performing naam prasanga in the residence of Assamese families in the NCR during the auspicious month of Bhado.”

“This year’s Sri Krishna Janmashtami celebration was most special to me. I could celebrate it with our Vashnavite fervour. I couldn’t have asked for anything better,” said Major General Bhuyan, who recently took over as the vice-president of Asom Sattra Mahasabha. “Our new generation which has grown up outside Assam is deprived of various rituals and rites. It is a small effort to connect them with our roots,” he said over telephone.

The bhakats were highly impressed with the devotion displayed by the Assamese community. “It’s a matter of great honour, privilege and joy for us to visit Delhi to spread the message of our great Vaishnavite Saint Srimanta Sankardev,” said Namacharya Sri Bikas Jyoti Mahanta. “I thank Asom Sattra Mahasabha and its working group, especially Abhijeet Mahanta, for taking this noble initiative,” he added.

“In 30 days we have to perform naam prasanga in 38 homes spread across entire NCR. It will be extremely hectic but seeing the enthusiasm of the people, we are ready to forego this discomfort,” said another bhakat.
