Guwahati: Assam finance and health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today said that the COVID-19 curve in Assam is starting to show a declining trend.
"At one point, the doubling rate was 11 days, then it rose to 15 days, and now, the rate is 17 days. This indicates that gradually, the COVID-19 curve has slowed down in Assam, which is why the doubling rate has increased", he said.
Apart from the North-eastern states of Mizoram, Sikkim, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh, Assam has the lowest COVID-19 mortality rate of 0.25%, Sarma said.
The Minister also said that the coronavirus positivity rate in the state is hovering near the 4-5% mark, which is near the permissible levels. Stating that the state health department has been conducting in excess of 50,000 tests on a daily basis, Sarma said that the state will soon reach the top position when it comes to the number of tests conducted per million.
Sarma added that 4 districts in the state have reported the highest number of COVID-19 related deaths. "Kamrup (Metro) has reported 51 deaths, Dibrugarh 27 deaths, Tinsukia 18 deaths and Cachar's toll is 14. "Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Silchar, and the twin Kamrup districts. In all these areas, the situation is a little concerning", added Sarma.
Meanwhile, the death toll due to the novel coronavirus in Assam climbed to 197 after eight more people succumbed to the deadly virus in the past 24 hours.
Assam also detected 2,792 new coronavirus positive patients on Monday. Since the first coronavirus case was detected, Assam has registered 79,667 cases.
In a tweet, Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said eight persons succumbed to coronavirus at different hospitals in the state in the past 24 hours.
Sarma further said the state had tested 49,510 samples for the new virus on Monday and out of these, 2792 tested positive. He said the positivity rate is 5.63 per cent.
Out of the new cases, 458 cases were reported from Kamrup (Metro) district, 227 cases from Cachar district, 225 cases from Dibrugarh district, and 195 cases detected in Kamrup (R) district.
