GUWAHATI: Assam's relentless campaign against child marriage has led to the apprehension of 17 individuals impersonating qazis in the Hailakandi district. This operation, carried out by the police, is part of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's commitment to eradicating child marriage from the state by 2026.
The crackdown on child marriage has gained momentum, with the recent arrest of these fake qazis in various locations across the Hailakandi district. These individuals have been identified as Aziruddin Laskar, Mufti Abul Hussain, Asadullah Laskar, Kaisur Ahmed, Abdul Jalal Laskar, Sarifuddin Barbhuiya, Farizuddin Laskar, Saidul Haque, Nurul Haque Laskar, and Abdul Salam Barbhuiya. Authorities have also seized ten Kabul namas from their possessions.
Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has been at the forefront of the state's efforts to combat child marriage. Earlier this month, he announced the launch of massive crackdowns against child marriage every six months. He has reiterated his commitment to making "big arrests" in the upcoming drives, set to take place later this month.
Speaking to the media about the ongoing campaign, CM Sarma emphasized the importance of continued efforts to eliminate child marriage. He stated, "Our campaign against child marriage will take place every six months. The next drive will be launched this month. The police are doing their job, and you will hear about some big arrests once the drive is launched."
The apprehension of these fake qazis underscores the gravity of the child marriage issue in Assam. Child marriage not only deprives children of their basic rights but also perpetuates cycles of poverty and gender inequality. By targeting individuals involved in facilitating child marriages, the state is sending a clear message that such practices will not be tolerated.
Assam's commitment to eradicating child marriage is commendable, and the efforts to apprehend fake qazis demonstrate the government's dedication to enforcing the law and protecting vulnerable children. The state's goal to eliminate child marriage by 2026 is ambitious, but with ongoing operations like this, it is a goal that can be achieved, ensuring a brighter and more secure future for the children of Assam.
