Assam's cricketing fraternity mourns demise of stalwart Prabodh Choudhury

Guwahati: Prabodh Choudhury, one of the promising names in the Assam cricket fraternity, passed away yesterday at the age of 83, leaving a great big void in the hearts of the cricketing fraternity.

Assam Cricket Association (ACA) Secretary Debojit Saikia took to Facebook to mourn the demise of the stalwart. "Another stalwart of Assam Cricket left for heavenly abode last evening...kind-hearted & adorable 83 years old Late Prabodh Choudhury, fondly called "Puali Da" in the cricketing fraternity, was a seasoned first-class cricketer during 50-70 decades. His demise has created a vacuum in the cricket scenario of the State which will be long felt.... heartfelt condolences to his cricketer son Peter & whole bereaved family... Paid last respect on behalf of Assam Cricket Association & attended the rituals at Nabagraha where his mortal remains are laid to rest."

Talking to The Sentinel Digital, Saikia said, "He (Choudhury) was a part of the cricket team of Assam for 3 decades, from the 50's to the 70's, which is considered a golden period in Assam's cricket history. Choudhury was always involved with the sport even after he hung up his boots. Be it as a coach, a manager, or organizer, he was always connected to the game. His absence will be sorely felt."

Former State Ranji cricketer Prabodh (Puwali) Choudhury passed away in Guwahati after a prolonged illness. Choudhury, born at Jorhat, represented Assam in Ranji Trophy between 1959-60 and 1978-79 and took 28 wickets in 11 matches that he played.

A contemporary of renowned state cricketers like Abani Hazarika, MP Barua, A.Guharoy, Tapan Barua, Badal Thakur, RP Kapoor, Choudhury also represented the NF Railway team on several occasions in inter-district competitions and also turned out for East Zone School team in 1955-56.
