Guwahati: Senior IPS officer Tapan Kumar Deka was appointed as the chief of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) on June 24 and he will be replacing Arvind Kumar whose extended tenure will come to an end on June 30.
Deka originally hails from Barpeta district in lower Assam but was brought up in Tezpur.
He has been handling the operations wing of the IB.
According to an official order issued by the Personnel Ministry, he will take over as the new Director of IB and his tenure will last for a period of two years.
Notably, Deka happens to be a 1988 batch IPS officer from the Himachal Pradesh cadre and is the first police officer from the Northeast to be appointed as the Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB).
58-year-old Deka is currently serving as the Special Director of IB and he is also in charge of counter-terror operations in Jammu and Kashmir.
Deka mostly worked with the Intelligence Bureau of India and is known to be a close aide of NSA Ajit Doval.
He joined the Intelligence Bureau in 1998 and since then he was never seen in a police uniform.
Deka, who holds a Master's Degree in Physics, was an AASU leader and he cleared Indian Police Service (IPS) on his first attempt.
