GUWAHATI, Sept 2: The Assam Tea Tribe Student Association (ATTSA) has demanded revoking the mandatory approval of the MP, local MLA and Tea Tribe Welfare Board president which is needed for certain schemes meant for the tea tribes community.
ATTSA president Dhiraj Gowala said, "There are about 10 schemes for unemployed people of the community where, in order to avail the benefits of the schemes, the applicants must get the signatures of the MP, local MLA and Tea Tribe Welfare Board president on their application forms. This rule is not there in other schemes. Such a rule makes it difficult for many tea tribes people to apply for the schemes because it is not easy for them to meet the MP, local MLA and Tea Tribe Welfare Board president to get their signatures."
"There is no logic in this rule. We demand that this rule must be scrapped so that the benefits of these schemes can be availed by all," he further said.
On the other hand, the ATTSA Guwahati committee members had gone to the Tea Tribe Welfare office in the city on Friday to submit a memorandum with this demand. ATTSA alleged that the police did not allow them to submit the memorandum. Terming this move as 'undemocratic', Gowala said that in protest against irregularities in implementation of schemes for the tea tribes, ATTSA would launch a movement soon.
