Awareness programme on child labour held at Axomiya Club, Tezpur

Tezpur: An awareness programme on the theme of child labour, child marriage, and child trafficking was held on Wednesday at the Axomiya Club premises. It was organized by the District Child Protection Unit, Sonitpur. The programme was inaugurated by Additional Deputy Commissioner Kulen Sarma while District Child Protection Officer Rubi Kalita explained the objectives of the meeting. The meeting was conducted by the chairman of the Child Welfare Committee, Dilip Kumar Baruah.

Speaking on the occasion, ADC Kulen Sarma laid stress on the need to create awareness at the ground level about the legal provisions and other perils associated with child marriage and child labour. He also urged the officials of the DCPU and police to take prompt action whenever any such case was brought to the notice of the authorities.

Secretary of District Legal Services Authority, Asma Rahman spoke at length about the legal provisions of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006 and said there was the need to create more awareness about the stringent provisions in the Act so that it could act as a deterrent in the society.

DSP (Hqs) Sonitpur, Dr. Rashmi Rekha Sharma spoke on various issues related to child trafficking. Member of Juvenile Justice Board, Bodhendra Nath Sarma, Assistant Labour Commissioner Bornali Sharma Changkakoti, and Dr. Siddheshwar of the LGBI of Mental Health, Tezpur also spoke on the occasion.
