GUWAHATI: The officers and staff members of NSSO, Regional Office Guwahati carried out an aware-ness campaign on hand hygiene, anti-plastic, anti-littering and anti-spitting, on Kochapara market, Mirza on Wednesday, as a part of the Swachhta Pakhwada (July 1 - July 15) of Ministry of Statistics & Programme Imple-mentation (MoSPI). This market is one of the CPI(U) markets from which price data on various commodities are collected monthly by NSSO, Regional Office Guwahati.
The CPI(U) which stands for Consumer Price Index (Urban), were originally introduced to provide a measure of changes in the living costs of workers, so that their wages could be compensated to the changing level of prices. However, over the years, CPIs have been used as a macroeconomic indicator of inflation, monitoring price stability, deflators in the National Accounts and so on. As such, the price data collected from selected shops of these markets are of great significance for the economy. However, the data givers of such shops are not always very co-operative, as due to which such swachhta campaigns are being done in these markets so as to publicise the real intention of the data collection. Sanitizers, soaps and pens containing the NSO logo were distributed to the shopkeepers, and also to bystanders who enquired about the reason for the campaigning. Placards displaying the theme have been affixed in different places of the market and some shopkeepers even invited such placards to be affixed inside their shop, stated a press release.
