TANGLA: In a novel way to promote safe driving, traffic discipline and awareness on the (MV Act) Motor Vehicle Act, 2019, Bhergaon subdivisional police were on the roads of Tangla town in Udalguri district on Thursday rewarding all those who follow traffic rules with a rose.
“There has been resentment over the imposition of heavy fines on traffic rule violators after the new Act came into force on September 1. So, we felt a need of conducting awareness drives. The MV Act is not a revenue-generating exercise rather safety of the people is our prime concern,” Subdivisional Police Officer Nirmal Ghosh said.
The police personnel, however, did not impose penalty on the offenders and requested the commuters to follow the traffic rules in letter and spirit. “We are urging people to wear helmets while driving two-wheelers,” said Pallabi Barman, a female police personal while distributing roses to traffic rule abiders. During the Durga Puja festival, the police will be focusing on drunken driving, use of mobile phones while driving, driving on the wrong side of roads, triple riding and non-usage of helmets and seat belts.
MV Act, 2019, According to the official notification using mobile while driving will attract a fine of Rs 5,000 followed by Rs 10,000 driving vehicles during disqualification/suspension, Rs 2,000 for driving LMV with excess speed, Rs 5,000 for using vehicle without registration & fitness certificate, Rs 200 per extra passenger in transport vehicle, Rs 20,000 for overloading goods vehicles and Rs 500 for travelling without ticket. Sources in the State Transport department said the stricter rules have been implemented to imbibe a sense of responsibility among citizens as it could lead to a reduction in the number of traffic rule violations in the country.
