SIVASAGAR: An awareness programme on conservation of locally available endangered fishes was conducted by the Department of Zoology, Gargaon College in collaboration with the Parents Teachers Association, Department of Zoology, Gargaon College recently.

The objective of the programme was to create awareness about the causes behind vanishing native fish varieties once locally readily available. During the initiation of the programme, Dr Rina Handique, Vice Principal and Head, Department of Zoology, Gargaon College spoke about the existence of rich fish diversity in the past decades which is declining rapidly. She also pointed out the causes behind the rapid loss of the fish diversity.

The programme was carried forwarded by an informative presentation by the speaker, Dr Anurag Protim Das, guest faculty, Department of Zoology, Gargaon College, in which he explained the current status of the fishery resources of Northeast India, emphasizing more on the ornamental fish diversity and conservation. During his presentation, he pointed the key factors responsible for the rapid loss of native fish diversity and the effective measures for its conservation. He also highlighted the prospect of ornamental and aquarium fish trade as small scale agro-based start-up for employment generation as well as conservation of local piscine diversity through culture of native varieties.

Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta, the noted columnist and Principal of Gargaon College, appreciated the effort of the faculties members of the Zoology Department for organizing such an awareness programme for making the people conscious to conserve the locally endangered fish species.
