MANGALDAI: The National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Multiple Disabilities (NIEPMD), Chennai under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment in association with Baraliya Welfare Society (BWS) - an NGO based at Baihata Chariali in the Kamrup district, organized an awareness-cum-training programme on children with multiple disabilities on Tuesday here at the District Library auditorium.
The programme aimed at imparting knowledge among the stakeholders about multiple disabilities, its cause, symptoms and to provide the relevant information for proper handling of such specially needy children. Clinical Psychology Sangita Das of Swahid Mukunda Kakati Civil Hospital, Nalbari, Adolescent Counsellor of Titabor Civil Hospital, Jorhat, Srimonto Hazarika, Senior Speech Therapist and Audiologist of NIEPMD, M Hari and Raktima Baruah, retired CDPO, taking part in the programme as the resource persons threw light on the 21 types of disabilities, plight of the such children due to social stigma, safeguarding their rights and role of the stakeholders to help them lead a normal life, among others.
The day-long programme moderated by Arup Deka of BWS was also addressed by District Social Welfare Officer, Rajlakshmi Deuri, CDPO, Pub Mangaldai ICDS , Bhakti Debi Roy , senior journalists Bhargab Kumar Das, Mayukh Goswami and others. Over 150 participants, including Anganwadi workers, ASHA, members of SHGs took part in it.
