SILCHAR: A CBI team from Shillong has trapped the branch manager of Badarpur Punjab National Bank in its net in a bribery case. The CBI team raided the PNB branch office on Thursday and quizzed its manager Dignesh Jha, first at the office and later in his residence till midnight and finally arrested him. Sources said, the sleuths had taken Jha to their Shillong office for further interrogation.
Jha had reportedly demanded a bribe from one Suraj Malakar who applied for a loan of Rs 10 lakh under a central scheme to start his own enterprise. Jha reportedly harassed Malakar and his demands started to escalate. A frustrated Malakar lodged a complaint with the PMO. Sources said, the PMO had instructed the Shillong zonal office of the central intelligence agency to look after the case. Accordingly the CBI raided the PNB Badarpur branch and finally picked up Jha.
Another source said, some local brokers had nexus with various banks in the rural areas for various government schemes. After the CBI action, such middlemen had reportedly vanished from the locality.
