SILCHAR: Amid communal polarisation centering the draft delimitation, a part of Silchar town with a mixed population on Thursday saw clashes between two groups following vandalism and finally lathicharge by police. Tension gripped the Panchayat Road area of Silchar town after a group of people raised the allegation that the Cow Slaughter Act was broken inside a local Dargah during today’s Bakri idd. A mob of irritated people allegedly tried to enter the dargah, where hundreds of Muslims gathered for Namaz. Both groups allegedly started stone-pelting, injuring a few people. A number of autorickshaws and e-rickshaws were vandalised. Later, police led by SP Nomal Mahatta arrived at the spot and tried to control the situation. Mahatta talked to both groups. At one time, the police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the irate mob.

DIG (Southern Range) Kankan Jyoti Saikia in the afternoon briefed the media that situation was normal. However, a posse of CRPF had been deployed in the greater College Road, Chencoorie Road area, etc.

Meanwhile, in Katigorah, the police arrested six people who allegedly violated the Cow Slaughter Act.
