Bandh passes off peacefully in Hailakandi

Hailakandi: The 11-hour North East bandh called by the North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) passed off peacefully in Hailakandi district on Tuesday. Security was beefed up across the district especially in the vulnerable areas to thwart any untoward incident. There were no reports of any untoward incident from any part of the district.

All the government offices functioned normally. Altogether 309 picketers were detained by the police for trying to enforce the bandh in the district. Of the total picketers detained, 93 were under Hailakandi PS, 100 under Algapur PS, 30 under Panchgram PS, 60 under Lala PS and 11 under Ramnathpur PS.

On Monday, the district administration appealed to the people to maintain peace and tranquility in the wake of the bandh called by NESO against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill on Tuesday. Deputy Commissioner, Keerthi Jalli and Superintendent of Police, Pabindra Kumar Nath asked the people not to be provoked or misled by certain elements out to disturb peace in the society. They asked the people to keep a sharp watch over any suspicious activity and to report immediately to the nearest police station. The Deputy Commissioner convened a meeting with senior citizens and representatives of political parties at her office on Monday and urged them to cooperate with the administration in maintaining normalcy during the bandh period. The administration kept a close tab on social media throughout the bandh period.
