Bangalore APU Student Passes Away Following A Hunger Strike Against Mandatory Shuttle Fee

KARNATAKA: Following a protest against the required shuttle fee for dormitory students on Friday, a student from Bengaluru's Azim Premzi University passed away from a heart arrest.

The student, named Abhijeet, was said to be participating in a hunger strike with the other protesting students. A student who spoke to the media claimed that Abhijit had been on a hunger strike since the protest's tenth day and had finally broken his fast on Thursday.

He went on a 24-hour hunger strike. ‘We only realised there was a right way to break the fast after he passed away because we were unaware of it before. Even I experienced uneasiness after the fast was broken. ’, the student added.

Additionally, the protesting students also alleged that they were threatened by the authorities of the university and that the campus also lacked proper medical care.

“Even after we told them about the hunger strike, the college still lacks emergency medical care. Instead, the management threatened us with disciplinary action.” they asserted.

As the administration was stringent about attendance and showed no mercy, some of the protesting students were also forced to go to class.

"The university administration is merely attempting to save its reputation by claiming that Abhijeet was not involved in the demonstration, however, we are all crushed by his loss," the student continued.

Abhijit's deceased body is kept in the St. John’s hospital in Bengaluru. Notably, the university has not stated anything regarding the episode until now.

The compulsory shuttle cost of Rs. 8,500 for KGA dormitory students, which is located two kilometres from the campus, sparked a more than ten-day protest by APU students.

The administration did, however, agree to remove the shuttle cost for students receiving financial aid on Friday.
