KOKRAJHAR: ‘Clean Kokrajhar and Green Kokrajhar’ is a popular slogan in Kokrajhar where some NGOs and groups are working to keep Kokrajhar clean. But despite this fact, a huge dump of single-use plastic items was seen in the Baokhungri Festival venue at Harinaguri in Kokrajhar. These single-use plastic items dumped have caused an impact on the environment in the Chakrasilla Wildlife Sanctuary.
The 10th Baokhungri Festival was held at Harinaguri near Baokhungri Hills in Kokrajhar in April 12 to April 14. The festivall was hosted by the department of Tourism in connivance with the departments of Culture, Sports and other line departments. The Baokhungri Festival has become one of the most well-known festivals in Assam as visitors and competitors of hill tracking competition used to come to this festival from across the country.
The festival is a showcase of ethnic food festival, folk culture of tribal communities, indigenous games, hill tracking, cycling and marathon competitions and paragliding expedition etc. A large number of visitors were witnessed this year too. The festival concluded successfully.
But it is a matter of concern that single-use plastic items used in hotels and restaurants in the festival were discarded on the field. No one has come forward to collect or dispose of the plastic items. The plastic items scattered all around has caused a threat to the environment in the Chakrasilla Wildlife Sanctuary.
