SILCHAR: The victory in three cow belt states had buoyed the spirit of the saffron brigade in the Barak Valley while the oppositions like the Congress and the TMC wore a brave face with the logic that the Lok Sabha election was a different game ball. Other opposition party, AIUDF, however, explained the result as a failure of the Congress for not forging INDIA alliance in these states. The BJP offices in the Barak Valley, which suffered a jolt due to the recent delimitation, was in a celebratory mood. Patharkandi MLA distributed sweets among the party workers. “I am very happy particularly for the reason that the region I was entrusted with by the party in Chhatisgarh, has seen a tremendous result for the BJP,” a jubilant Paul said.

The BJP MLA from Lakhipur Kausik Rai was confident that in the ensuing Lok Sabha election, the party would definitely win at least 350 seats. Kausik was happy for the reason that the Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma played a vital role in the campaigning in the all the four states. “Our Chief Minister had an extensive campaign schedule with 79 public rallies and 11 road-shows. With the leadership of Dr. Sarma, the BJP will win maximum seats in Assam including two Barak Valley constituencies”, Kausik said.

However, former MP Susmita Dev said, the Lok Sabha election would be a different game ball as the opposition parties would take on the ruling party as a combined force. In 180 LS seats there would be direct fight between the BJP and the Congress and in other seats, the INDIA alliance would fight jointly, she argued.

Kamalakha Dey Purkayastha, the state Congress working president, too, voiced the same logic. State elections had their own local issues and agenda whereas the general election covers the entire nation and as such the focus would be in far far broader aspects, maintaining this Dey Purkayastha said, the ruling party would face the acute anti-incumbency throughout the country.

The AIUDF MLA from Sonai Karimuddin Barbhuiyan, on the other hand, said the Sunday result was a warning call for the Congress that if they failed to fight as INDIA alliance, they would never succeed in defeating the Modi magic. “The Congress should learn a lesson from these results and should come out with hands wide open for the allies,” Barbhuiyan added.
